Yes! The beaches were surprising to me too. I didn't know there were some famous surf spots there too. My husband is an avid surfer, but couldn't come with me. Apparently, the surf spots are famous but still pretty untouched by locals = no crowds.
Did you do any of the hot springs? We did a few and they were so fun. I loved that you could choose different types of baths and we dipped our feet in with the fish (who eat your dead skin off - ewww).
Yes, there are so many mountains on the east side, and not many roads, so the beautiful beaches are not well-traveled. So quiet & peaceful there. Our hotel bathroom had hot-springs water coming in through the tub faucet, so I got to enjoy it in the privacy of our room--so nice! No fish chewing at my toes, though! :)
