The Road Home

I just saw the movie "The Road Home" by director Yimou Zhang, starring Ziyi Zhang in her film debut.  It was made back in 2000 and is in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles.

The movie starts out showing Luo Yusheng, a young man from the city, coming home to his village upon learning of his father's death.  He finds out that his mother is insisting that his father be carried home in a coffin by foot on the long road from a neighboring town.  This is the town's tradition and serves to help his father, in his afterlife, to remember his way home.

Luo Yusheng then tells the story of how his parents met when his mother was an illiterate village girl of 18 and his father was a school teacher sent to teach in the new school house that he and the villagers had built.  Every day, his mother would walk by the school and listen to his father's voice coming from the school house.  After school, she would wait for a chance to see him walking home with the children on the road.  When he was sent away for political questioning, she stood by the road and waited for his return.  It was his mother's wish to bring his father home again on that long road.

A simple story, beautifully told in this movie about love and longing and devotion.

I haven't seen this movie.

I haven't seen this movie.  It sounds like a great story. I may have to check it out the next time my mom is here.  She loves movies that take place in settings like these.

Good movie

I totally cried at parts. I liked the bit about the chipped bowl. Cute.
