Red Envelopes

in
Friday, January 9, 2009

It's a Chinese tradition to give out red envelopes ("Hong Bao" in Mandarin) filled with money on Chinese New Year.  The red color is for good luck and is supposed to ward off evil spirits.  The amount of money should not contain the number 4 or be an odd number because that is considered bad luck.

These red envelopes say "Wan Shi Ru Yi" in Mandarin, which means "May 10,000 endeavors go your way."

2009--the Year of the Ox

in
Wednesday, January 7, 2009

2009 is the Year of the Ox ("Niu" in Mandarin).

I'm in love with these onesies of the Chinese zodiac animals, created by Wanart.  They are wrapped in a Chinese take-out box with a gift card, and are the perfect gift.

Wanart makes wonderful cards, as well.  On the back of the card is a description of the Ox:

"Year of the Ox
1913 · 1925 · 1937 · 1949 · 1961 · 1973 · 1985 · 1997
Those born under this sign are logical, patient, and easygoing.  They have a strong sense of integrity and are often unpretentious, quite reserved, and reflective.  Born leaders, they inspire confidence in those around them."

Which Chinese zodiac animal are you?  Go to Wikipedia to find out!

Chinese New Year Decorations

Looking for some decorations to celebrate Chinese New Year?

Check out these beautiful Chinese paper lanterns in red & gold.

I like these hanging swirl decorations with a dragon or the Chinese character "Fu," which means "Happiness" or "Good Fortune."

I also love the matching plates, showing narcissus & plum blossoms and the Chinese characters "Wan Shi Ru Yi," which means "May 10,000 endeavors go your way."  Perfect for your Chinese New Year party!

Wanart Chinese New Year Card

Chinese New Year is January 26, 2009.

I really love this Chinese New Year Liondance card by Wanart.  It's so cute!

It says "Happy New Year" in English and "Gong Xi Fa Cai" in Mandarin, which means "Congratulations and best wishes for a prosperous New Year!"

Koi Pond Screensaver

in
Thursday, January 1, 2009

I love going to the Japanese Garden and watching the koi fish in the pond.  They are so beautiful, I could watch them for days.  So, when I saw this Koi Pond screensaver, I just had to have it.

Actually, it's a big hit in this family.  The girls love it.  We all sit around and stare at it...mesmerized.  There are lily pads, leaves, flowers, a dragonfly, beautiful ripples of water, and, of course, koi fish swimming all around--accompanied by relaxing Japanese music.  It's very peaceful and enjoyable.

Happy New Year!
