at the beach.jpgAt the Beach, by Huy Voun Lee, is a story about Xiao Ming, a child who goes to the beach with his mother.  His mother explains to him that "many Chinese characters are like pictures."  She teaches him how to draw Chinese characters by making pictures in the sand.  A person "looks like someone walking."  He learns to write person, big, small, sky, water, mountain, sand, woman, child, and good in Chinese.  The illustrations are lovely, and it's interesting to see what the author imagines to be the origins of these Chinese characters.  Other books in this series include:  In the Park, In the Leaves, and In the Snow.
