Movie Review: "Hugo"
This past weekend, we went to see "Hugo," Martin Scorsese's intriguing, new 3-D film based on Brian Selznick's book The Invention of Hugo Cabret.
Hugo is an orphan in the 1930's, who lives in a busy train station in Paris. His drunken uncle gave him the job of winding the clocks. In flashbacks, Jude Law plays Hugo's father, a clockmaker who came across an old automaton in the attic of a museum. Hugo continues to try to fix the automaton after his father dies by stealing pieces from an old toy shop owner, Georges Melies, played by Ben Kingsley.
Georges catches Hugo stealing and takes away Hugo's father's notebook. Hugo befriends Georges' god-daughter Isabelle to help him to get his notebook back. The two friends discover a fascinating mystery about the old man's past.
Meanwhile, Sacha Baron Cohen plays the Train Station Inspector, who is always trying to catch unlucky orphans to send them off to the orphanage. Hugo has to dodge him repeatedly and must somehow find a way to take care of himself.
