Hm, Angela sounds like my mom, whose parents raised her speaking English -- my mom took a couple quarters in college, but memorizing all the characters was too much.  Luckily she sent my brother and me to a bilingual school to learn Chinese, but I also had plenty of friends who didn't pick up Chinese [and learning about their cultural heritage] until college, which is a perfect place to do that if it is difficult to get before that.  She always raised us to be proud of being Chinese and that's made a huge difference.  Thanks for the profile, very interesting and inspiring!
