baby bottle.jpgThere is a lot of press lately about Bisphenol A.

According to the National Toxicology Program:

"Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical produced in large quantities for use primarily in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins.  BPA is weakly estrogenic, and may have additional biological activites.  Polycarbonate plastics have many applications including use in certain food and drink packaging, e.g., water and infant bottles, compact discs, impact-resistant safety equipment, and medical devices.  Epoxy resins are used as lacquers to coat metal products such as food cans, bottle tops, and water supply pipes.  Some polymers used in dental sealants or composites contain bisphenol A-derived materials.

"The NTP concurs with the conclusion of the CERHR Expert Panel on Bisphenol A that there is some concern for neural and behavioral effects in fetuses, infants, and children at current human exposures. The NTP also has some concern for bisphenol A exposure in these populations based on effects in the prostate gland, mammary gland, and an earlier age for puberty in females."

This sounds concerning, however, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says:

"At this time, FDA is not recommending that anyone discontinue using products that contain BPA while we continue our risk assessment process. However, concerned consumers should know that several alternatives to polycarbonate baby bottles exist, including glass baby bottles."

What can consumers do?  The NTP recommends this:

"If you are concerned, you can make personal choices to reduce exposure:

stainshield.jpgDon't microwave polycarbonate plastic food containers. Polycarbonate is strong and durable, but over time it may break down from over use at high temperatures.

Polycarbonate containers that contain BPA usually have a #7 on the bottom.

Reduce your use of canned foods.

When possible, opt for glass, porcelain or stainless steel containers, particularly for hot food or liquids.

Use baby bottles that are BPA free. "

On their website, Rubbermaid lists for you their products with and without BPA.  And Safe Mama lists BPA-Free bottles, sippy cups, and milk and food storage items to help you make your choices.

What do you think of all this?
