Book Review: Free Food for Millionaires

in
Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Free Food for Millionaires Free Food for Millionaires by Min Jin Lee is the first novel written by this Korean American writer.  Her main character, Casey Han, is a child born to Korean immigrants, who is trying to make sense of her life in the US.  Feeling somewhat out-of-place, she wanders through life, unsure of her choices.  It is easy to relate to her experiences as the daughter of immigrants, caught in between her strict Asian upbringing and the carefree world of her American counterparts.  The characters' involvement with smoking, drinking, gambling, debt, eviction, estrangement, violence, betrayal, & infidelity, may not be the typical Asian American experience, but does make for interesting reading.  Overall, an enjoyable and well-written novel.

Little Einsteins

Little Einsteins Little Einsteins is a Playhouse Disney animated show that features a group of young kids flying in a Rocket on various adventures.  Along the way, they teach their preschool viewers about classical music and art in an interactive way.  The characters are Leo, June, Quincy, and Annie.  June is an Asian American dancer, voiced by Erica Huang.

In The Legend of the Golden Pyramid, the kids travel to Egypt, see hieroglyphics & the Sphinx, and find the Golden Pyramid.  Then, they travel to China, see the works of famous Chinese painters, and join the big Dragon Kite Parade along the Great Wall of China.  Next, the kids fly over Coit Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to rescue a helicopter.  While carrying out their exciting missions, the kids listen to the music of Brahms, Grieg, & Mozart.

Our kids love this show!

Pocky Sticks & Botan Rice Candy

in

Pocky Sticks Pocky Sticks are my favorite Asian snacks.  They are made by a Japanese company called Glico and are basically a biscuit stick covered in chocolate.  Very light and delicious!  Can be messy, though, if eaten on a hot day.

 Botan Rice Candy

Another Asian treat we enjoyed while growing up was Botan Rice Candy.  It's a sweet & chewy Japanese candy with an edible rice paper wrapper.  Ah...happy memories from childhood!
