Fresh Tomatoes from our Garden

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

The kids decided that they wanted to grow their own garden this summer, so we chose some containers and planted a bunch of seeds.  Not all of our produce survived the two weeks while we were away on vacation, but our tomatoes did grow.

The kids faithfully watered their plants every day, and fertilized them every 2 weeks.  Now the tomatoes are ripening, and the kids are so excited.  How fun to grow our own "organic" vegetables!

Wow! These are GORGEOUS tomatoes! Your daughters are awesome! I've only harvested 3 so far this year, which seems to be so late in the season... But I still have many a green ones. Maybe I should fertilize, too. Yours look much nicer.

Hi Sandra,

We used Miracle-Gro Plant Food, so we kinda cheated. But hey, whatever it takes, right? :)

Good for you!

I know that E would have loved to grow a garden this summer, but despite the very best of intentions the only thing we grew this year was weeds :P I guess there's always next year!

Hi Faith,

I've heard that tomatoes are the easiest to grow, so that's a good place to start!

Hi Mommy to Chumsy,

Yes, the kids really did a good job taking care of the plants, and it paid off. Just had some more tomatoes at dinner tonight--Mmmm!

Looks delicious! Our tomatoes

Looks delicious! Our tomatoes are still coming in. We also had string beans and they turned out great. I think we will definitely try growing more veggies next year!

Hi Eva,

Yum--string beans sound good, too. We'll have to try that next year.

Yum! Those look delicious!

Yum! Those look delicious! And what a great family activity. I bet your kids loved it. I find that my boys love eating veggies grown in our garden too.

Hi Tracey,

I think gardening is a great way to teach them at a young age to be responsible and to take care of something. They can see how well their tomatoes and their geraniums grew this year with their constant watering and attention.

Your tomatoes look great. We

Your tomatoes look great. We never get but one or two and nothing like yours! Our plot is not sunny enough I am afraid. Aren't the garden ones so much better though?!

Hi PragmaticMom,

They really do taste much fresher!

Do they eat more tomatoes

Do they eat more tomatoes because they helped grow them? Next spring, we want to plant veggies too!

Hi Lisacng,

That was the idea, but actually...it's mom & dad who are eating the tomatoes.
