More Sewing at Joann

Sunday, September 30, 2012

My little 8-year-old had never used a sewing machine before, but look what she made yesterday at her class at Joann.  Within 3 hours, she made a pillowcase and a little tote bag--Wow!

My tween niece took classes

My tween niece took classes there this past summer and made some cool things, too. I love that the store offers these classes!

Hi Bicultural Mama,

Me, too! My girls won't have to opportunity to take sewing in junior high like I did, so this is the only chance for them to learn how to sew from someone who knows how.

Sewing is a great skill to have! I think it's time for my daughter to start on the sewing machine. We've been handsewing for a while! Very cute.

Hi Thien-Kim,

I agree--I'm amazed at how much they've learned in their classes and what they can do at such a young age!

This makes me want to break out my sewing machine.

How fun. I learned how to sew in Middle School, and taught myself how to make my own dresses. But I don't have time or space to do much sewing now. Maybe someday!

Hi HapaMama,

That would be cool to make your own clothes. My mom used to do that, but I never got beyond potholders. :)

Wow!

Sewing is not an easy skill! I have a sewing machine, and I think it's just not my thing. I've made a few simple items, like a dress and some pj pants, but that's about it. So I'm very impressed by your girls' final products! Great jobs!

Hi Sandra,

Thanks! I think it helps to have a good teacher, and the instructors at Joann have been really great.

She's faster than me ;). I

She's faster than me ;). I NEED that class!

Hi Lisacng,

They have classes for adults, too! I took an intro sewing class as a refresher for me, and it was helpful.

Good job girls!

The girls did a good job! Sewing is definitely a good skill to have. When I was a teen I never wanted to learn how to sew even though my mom knew how to and wanted to teach me. Ironically I went to college for Fashion Design and needed to learn how to sew then. Hopefully my kids won't be like me and will actually want to learn when they get older so I can teach them.

Hi Zi,

The girls are really excited about sewing at this age--I hope they don't outgrow it! Fashion Design must've been an amazing experience for you.

wow.... very nice. I am still trying to learn to sew. : )

Hi Savvy gal,

Thanks--I'm so glad that they have these classes for the kids.

Well done to your daughter.

Well done to your daughter. That's a very nice pillowcase and tote. Wish there is a sewing course here for kids.

Hi Mommy to Chumsy,

We used to learn how to sew in school. We had cooking classes, too, as part of Home Arts. We even learned metal-working and wood-working in Industrial Arts. I'm sure those days are long gone. What a shame--it was fun!
