Pumpkin Farms

in
Monday, October 15, 2012

For the past several years, we've gone to Bengston's Pumpkin Farm in Homer Glen, IL every fall. There always seemed to be coupons in the mail, and the kids always had fun there. There's a pony ride, petting zoo, wagon ride, corn maze, little amusement park rides, a train, pig races, a fun barn, and a haunted barn, plus a selection of pumpkins to choose from.

This year, our friends invited us to Dollinger's Pumpkin Farm in Channahon, IL. It's a bit farther away, so less crowded and less commercialized, plus we got a deal with LivingSocial, which made it very affordable. The kids had a blast jumping on the giant haystacks and running in and out of the little play houses in the Farm Playground. We rode the steam train and walked through the giant 4-acre corn maze. They also had a petting zoo and horse-drawn hayrides, but the Spooky Barn was closed the day we visited. We had fun picking out pumpkins here.

Another weekend, we met friends at All Seasons Apple Orchard in Woodstock, IL. It's not a good year for apples, so we went to the Pumpkin Patch instead. The kids had fun in the bouncy houses, on the mini zip lines, and on the cow train. They enjoyed riding pedal karts, racing plastic ducks, feeding goats, shooting corn husks, playing in the corn pit, watching the pig race, and seeing the magic show. The 12-acre corn maze was huge and easy to get lost in. & Of course, we had to buy more pumpkins!

Overall, we had fun exploring new places and spending time outdoors with the kids.

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

Spent a day at Starved Rock State Park in Utica, IL.  It was a perfect fall day.  The leaves are just starting to change color, and the kids had fun hiking and enjoying the beautiful scenery.  This is the view from Lover's Leap Overlook.

My little 8-year-old had never used a sewing machine before, but look what she made yesterday at her class at Joann.  Within 3 hours, she made a pillowcase and a little tote bag--Wow!

Sewing Classes at Joann

in
Saturday, September 29, 2012

My older daughter got a sewing machine for her birthday when she turned 10 and has been taking sewing classes at Joann this past year.

Today, she made a pair of pajama pants.  How cute!

The classes and materials add up in cost, but they often have 50% off coupons, which we can take advantage of. Someday, I hope she'll find it useful to know how to sew.

To sign up for classes, visit Joann.

EWG's Guide to Green Cleaners

in
Saturday, September 15, 2012

The Environmental Working Group is concerned about toxic substances found in household products that we use every day, which are linked to health problems, including asthma, allergies, and cancer.

The EWG has created an online guide, EWG's 2012 Guide to Healthy Cleaning, which rates over 2000 household products with grades for safety from A to F.

Some substances to avoid include formaldehyde (a carcinogen), 1,4-dioxane (a suspected carcinogen), chloroform (a suspected carcinogen), benzalkonium chloride (can cause asthma), and sodium borate (can disrupt the hormone system.)

Some green brands they recommend include Green Shield Organic and Whole Foods' Green Mission.

What are your favorite green cleaning products?
