Tweens

in
Tuesday, August 21, 2012

In this last week before school started, I took the kids to the Arboretum, the Zoo, and the Children's Museum.  The kids had a blast and really enjoyed it, but it had been a while since we'd been to these old favorite places, and I noticed that my 8 and 10-year-olds were sort of swimming in a sea of toddlers and preschoolers.  It made me realize that the kids are getting older, and maybe soon, they'll be too old for the stuff that we've always done.

So, now that I've got "tweens," I'm wondering...what am I supposed to do with them?  They just seem so big.  Even at the playground, my 10-year-old keeps hitting her head on the equipment because she's getting to be too tall.  Poor thing!  In less than 5 months, she'll be 11, and I suppose it's true that you don't see too many 11-year-olds on playsets these days.  Please tell me there are other options for her than texting and going to the mall!

I think I'm going to keep encouraging them to swim, ski, play tennis, bike, & hike.  I'd love to try camping with them.  We took a few knitting & sewing classes at Jo-Ann, and we tried baking, fishing, and gardening this summer.  This fall, we'll continue with piano, Tae Kwon Do, and Chinese class, and we'll go from there.  Anyone have any other ideas?  What do you do with your tweens?

Going Down the Jersey Shore

in
Monday, August 20, 2012

Our trip to the Jersey Shore included a fun stay at Wildwood, where there's a lively boardwalk and lots of beach.  The kids had the best time playing in the sand and the waves.  The boardwalk was hopping day and night.  In the morning were bikes and surreys, then later in the day was a tram.  All along the boardwalk were tons of restaurants and shops, as well as daredevil amusement park rides that were truly scary.

We loved the Fudge Kitchen, with its wide variety of flavors.  We tried the pistachio, mint chocolate chip, and chocolate plain, but there was also strawberry, Snickers, peanut butter, chocolate coconut, pumpkin pie, cookies n cream, and more.

The Yogo Factory was also fun, with its frozen yogurt flavors, such as angel food cake, apple pie, cappuccino, carrot cake, and York chocolate peppermint, plus toppings such as Andes mints, animal crackers, Capt' N Crunch, Pop Tarts, Lucky Charms, and more.

We went down to visit Cape May, which has a different feel--much quieter and more elegant, with its Victorian homes.  It was fun visiting the Lighthouse, but our favorite part of the trip was going to Cape Kayaks, where we got to paddle through Cape May's Salt Marsh with a nature guide.  It was our first kayaking experience, and the kids had a blast!

Our Trip to Hershey, PA

in
Sunday, August 19, 2012

Our trip to Hershey, PA included a stop at Hershey's Chocolate World, where we took the Great American Chocolate Tour Ride.  This free tram ride shows you videos and simulations of chocolate being made from cocoa beans to chocolate bars.  You also get a free sample to taste.

We went to the Chocolate Tasting Adventure, which lets you taste the difference between milk chocolate, dark chocolate, artisan chocolate, Bliss, and more.  The kids got an opportunity to package Hershey's Kisses and put them on a conveyor belt.  You can also see a 3-D movie, go on a trolley tour through town, or create your own candy bar.

Then, we went to The Hershey Story Museum, where they showcase the life of Milton S. Hershey, how he got his start in candy-making, and how he switched to chocolate-making.  The kids did the Maya Chocolate Adventure.  They got to see examples of cacao beans, grind them, froth them, decode a hieroglyph, and sample some more chocolate.

We enjoyed our time at Hershey Gardens.  There were beautiful flowers and a lovely butterfly garden, where we got to identify the butterflies and see them coming out of their cocoons.  The kids had a great time there!
